Randomization and Restart Strategies
نویسنده
چکیده
The running time for solving constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) and propositional satisfiability problems (SAT) using systematic backtracking search has been shown to exhibit great variability. Randomization and restarts is an effective technique for reducing such variability to achieve better expected performance. Several restart strategies have been proposed and studied in previous work and show differing degrees of empirical effectiveness. The first topic in this thesis is the extension of analytical results on restart strategies through the introduction of physically based assumptions. In particular, we study the performance of two of the restart strategies on a class of heavy tail distribution that has been used to model running time. We show that the geometric strategy provably removes heavy tail of the Pareto form. We also examine several factors that arise during implementation and their effects on existing restart strategies. The second topic concerns the development of a new hybrid restart strategy in a realistic problem setting. Our work adapts the existing general approach on dynamic strategy but implements more sophisticated machine learning techniques. The resulting hybrid strategy shows superior performance compared to existing static strategies and an improved robustness.

A Randomization Strategy for Combinatorial Search
Recent work on the combinatorial search has provided experimental and theoretical evidence that randomization and restart strategies proposed by Gomes, Selman, and Kautz, can be very effective for backtrack search algorithms to solve some hard satisfiable instances of SAT. One difficulty of effectively using the restart strategy is its potential conflict with the branching heuristic. It is well...

متن کاملOn Universal Restart Strategies for Backtracking Search
Constraint satisfaction and propositional satisfiability problems are often solved using backtracking search. Previous studies have shown that a technique called randomization and restarts can dramatically improve the performance of a backtracking algorithm on some instances. We consider the commonly occurring scenario where one is to solve an ensemble of instances using a backtracking algorith...
متن کاملSome new restart vectors for explicitly restarted Arnoldi method
The explicitly restarted Arnoldi method (ERAM) can be used to find some eigenvalues of large and sparse matrices. However, it has been shown that even this method may fail to converge. In this paper, we present two new methods to accelerate the convergence of ERAM algorithm. In these methods, we apply two strategies for the updated initial vector in each restart cycles. The implementation of th...
متن کاملUsing Randomization and Learning to Solve Hard Real-World Instances of Satisfiability
This paper addresses the interaction between randomization, with restart strategies, and learning, an often crucial technique for proving unsatisfiability. We use instances of SAT from the hardware verification domain to provide evidence that randomization can indeed be essential in solving real-world satisfiable instances of SAT. More interestingly, our results indicate that randomized restart...
